A wonderful rare early antique silver lidded tankard with hall marks for London 1703 and the makers mark LE which stands for Timothy Ley, of Fenchurch Street, London. This beautiful tankard is of cylindrical tapering form with moulded foot, the stepped lid has a scalloped peak, it has an S shaped handle with a cast openwork thumb piece. Ypical decoration of the period with two embossed bands of reeded decoration around the body, and of excellent colour. To the front is a beuatiful engraved coat of arms on a heart shaped shield shield set within a decorative cartouche, which I have had researched. The Marital Arms of Portal and Peachy. The armorial bearings as engraved upon this Queen Anne English Sterling Silver Lidded Tankard by Timothy Ley hallmarked London 1703 are those of the family of Portal impaling Peachy. These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing on the dexter (the heraldic right on the left as you view the piece) the arms of the husband and on the sinister (the heraldic left on the right as you view it) the arms of the wife. They may be blazoned as follows. (on the dexter) Argent a castle gules on a chief azure a crescent between two mullets of the field (for Portal). (on the sinister).. ? …… a lion rampant.. ? …… ducally crowned or (for Peachy). These armorial bearings undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Joseph Portal (born 14th August 1720 died 14th December 1793), of Laverstoke in the County of Hampshire and Sarah Peachy (baptised 20th October 1719 died 27th December 1802). Joseph and Sarah were married on the 3rd November 1748 at Bishops Waltham in the County of Hampshire. Joseph was the only son of Henri Portal, of South Stoneham (Henri later anglicized his name to Henry when he naturalised as a British subject in 1711), (and subsequently of Freefolk) both in the County of Hampshire and his wife, Dorothy Hasker; whilst Sarah was the daughter of General John Peachy and his wife, Catherine Batt. One of Joseph and Sarah’s grandsons, William Spencer Portal (born 22nd July 1822 died 14th September 1905) was created a Baronet of the United Kingdom on the 11th March 1901 styled’of Malshanger’ in the County of Hampshire. Given the date of the manufacture of this tankard it was either in the possession of one of the two families at the time of Joseph and Sarah’s marriage in 1748 or was acquired by the couple at the time of their marriage or shortly thereafter. Whatever the case they had caused their arms to be engraved thereon. The maker’s mark LE in a circle with dots for Timothy Ley. For an example of the maker’s mark see’Jackson’s Silver & Gold Marks of England, Scotland & Ireland’. It would be a treasured piece for any discerning collector, and is sure to make an outstanding contribution to your collection.
